An Investigation of the Relationship Between Fear of Water and Adolescent Swimmers’ Swimming Skills, Self-Assessments, and Self-Confidence Levels

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between fear of water and swimming skills, self-assessments, and self-confidence levels among a total of 110 adolescent swimmers (34 boys, 76 girls) aged 14–18. Data were collected using the Fear of Swimming Scale, Swimming Skills Self-Assessment Scale, and Adolescent Self-Confidence Scale. Statistical analyses included t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Findings indicate that female adolescents have significantly higher fear of water (p<0.05) and lower swimming skills (p<0.05) compared to males, but no significant gender difference was found in self-confidence. No significant differences were detected among age groups (14-17). Correlation analyses revealed that as swimming skills increased, self-confidence significantly increased (r=0.68), and as fear of water increased, both swimming skills (r=-0.55) and self-confidence (r=-0.47) decreased. Regression analyses found that fear of water alone explained 30% of the variance in swimming skills and 22% of the variance in self-confidence. In the multiple regression model, when age, gender, fear of water, and self-confidence were considered together, these variables explained 58% of the total variance in swimming skills (Adjusted R²=0.56, p<0.001), with fear of water identified as the strongest negative predictor. In conclusion, fear of water among adolescent swimmers is the most significant factor negatively affecting both the development of technical skills and psychological well-being. The fact that adolescent girls have significantly higher levels of fear of water and lower swimming skills compared to boys highlights the need for gender-specific approaches. Therefore, training programs should prioritize strategies aimed at reducing fear of water and boosting self-confidence.
