Delirium is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by sudden changes in consciousness, attention deficit, and mood swings, frequently seen in patients admitted to intensive care units. Delirium is a serious health problem and can be a life-threatening condition. Many risk factors contribute to the development of delirium. Factors such as prolonged reliance on medical devices, disorientation in time and space due to artificial lighting, and visitor restrictions can all predispose patients to delirium. Delirium and physical activity are closely related, as immobility and functional decline have been identified as potential risk factors. Physical activity encompasses various interventions such as exercise, rehabilitation, and mobilization that can improve functional outcomes and minimize critical illness morbidity. International guidelines recommend physical activity encompassing early mobilization to reduce adverse critical illness outcomes by improving intensive care coordination. In this context, nurses, in Accordingly, nurses should work in collaboration with physiotherapists to support the implementation of early mobilization practices in intensive care patients, ranging from passive and active joint movements to independent walking, in order to prevent delirium. The aim of this review is to present nursing and physiotherapy-based approaches to early rehabilitation in the prevention and management of delirium in critically ill patients, in accordance with current information in the literature.
